Taiwan Hit by Typhoon Danas: Casualties, Power Disruptions Highlight Infrastructure Risks

(Credit: Liberty Times)

On 6 July 2025, Taiwan was struck by Typhoon Danas, bringing torrential rain and fierce winds that battered the central region of Chiayi. The storm left two people dead and 334 people injured, while nearly half a million households experienced power outages.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, citing Taiwan’s United Daily News, the Central Weather Administration reported during a morning briefing on 7 July that Danas had weakened into a tropical storm and its wind radius had shrunk significantly.

The storm exited the island near the Taoyuan-Hsinchu border at around 6:00AM local time (same time zone as Singapore), moving northeast and north. Tainan to Pingtung, Taitung and Penghu have escaped its storm circle, but it still poses a threat to the north of Chiayi, Yilan and Hualien. It is expected that the intensity of this typhoon will continue to weaken, and the storm circle will also tend to shrink.

Statistics from the Central Disaster Response Center show that as of the time of publication, a total of 495,770 households in Taiwan had lost power, of which 107,351 had power restored, while 388,419 still needed emergency repairs.

A Wake-Up Call for Infrastructure Resilience

A commentary published by AMPOWER, a Taiwan-based energy solutions firm, highlight the vulnerabilities of modern infrastructure in the face of extreme weather. In today’s highly interconnected, digital, and time-sensitive world, even brief power disruptions can paralyse entire systems.

The article also noted that traditional assumptions about risk zones are no longer reliable. Danas’s unexpected landfall in western Taiwan –– long considered less prone to direct typhoon strikes, has challenged long-held perceptions. This shift underscores the need for both public and private sectors to re-evaluate their risk maps and resilience strategies in response to the changing climate landscape.

Crisis Preparedness Must Be a Business Priority

In a separate report, Marsh highlighted actions businesses must take to manage typhoon and flood risk. One of the first actions companies should take is to implement a crisis management plan. This involves identifying staff who will be actively involved in the response, assigning clearly defined roles and conducting simulation exercises to fine-tune the response, so decisions such as suspending operations, shutting down physical facilities, or having employees work remotely can be made and put into practice quickly.

Typhoon Wipha Hits Philippines, leaving six dead

According to Lianhe Zaobao, citing AFP, the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported on 22 July 2025 that the storm had killed six people, injured five, and left another six missing. More than 1.26 million people were affected, with over 1,500 homes damaged.

Reports indicate that Wipha weakened to a tropical storm as it made landfall near the northern Vietnamese coastal city of Haiphong. The storm’s maximum wind speeds reached up to 88 kilometres per hour and is expected to continue moving southward toward Laos.

Looking Ahead: From Crisis to Readiness

Back-to-back typhoons like Danas and Wipha have not only left a trail of damage and disruption but have also exposed the fragility of modern society in the face of climate extremes. As the climate crisis intensifies, long-standing assumptions about risk zones and storm intensity are proving outdated. Business continuity models and infrastructure systems are being put to the test like never before. To remain resilient and operational, organisations must reassess their disaster preparedness — from pre-event planning to real-time response.
