Beyond Borders: Risk Managers Far from Home | Synthil Chetty on Building a Global Risk Perspective from South Africa to Hong Kong

Synthil spent most of his career in South Africa, where he built a strong foundation in risk, audit and governance across several multinational organisations. Over the years, he developed a global perspective on risk while supporting organisations with operations across multiple countries. In April 2024, Synthil took the next step in his career by moving to Hong Kong to join MTR Corporation, marking a new chapter that would expand his exposure to the dynamic business and risk landscape of Asia.

Building a Global Perspective

One of the most defining chapters of Synthil’s career came during his nearly sixteen years at AngloGold Ashanti, where he helped strengthen risk practices across mining operations located in multiple countries.

Managing risk across different regions brought its own challenges. Each operation had developed its own language and framework for assessing risk, often influenced by local priorities such as safety, finance or operational performance. Creating a common framework across these operations became a major undertaking.

“Each country had its own risk matrix and approach,” he said. “The challenge was building a common language so executives could compare risks across operations.”

For Synthil, the experience reinforced an important lesson: effective risk management helps leaders see the bigger picture.

Adapting in Fast-Moving Environments

Throughout his career, Synthil has also worked across different sectors, including logistics, an industry where risk decisions often need to be made rapidly.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, logistics companies faced immense pressure to maintain essential supply chains while adapting to sudden restrictions and operational disruptions.

We had to rethink our insurance models and operational structures quickly to keep costs manageable while ensuring business continuity,” he said.

A Bold Move Across Continents

After many years building his career in South Africa, Synthil eventually decided to pursue a new chapter abroad.

The move to Hong Kong was motivated by a desire to gain exposure to different cultures, regulatory environments and business perspectives. As Asia’s influence continued to grow globally, he saw an opportunity to immerse himself in a new market and expand his professional horizons.

“I wanted to understand how different cultures approach risk and decision-making,” he said. “Asia offered a completely new context and perspective.”

The move was not just a professional decision, but also a family one. Relocating meant leaving behind familiar communities and routines in South Africa, while embracing the opportunities that a new environment could offer.

“For my daughter, it meant learning new languages and gaining new experiences. For my wife, who works in banking, it also opened new opportunities. As a family, we saw it as a journey we would take together.”

Finding Community Far from Home

Adjusting to life in a new region inevitably came with changes, from daily habits to cultural norms. But over time, Synthil and his family began to settle into their new environment.

“Having a network gives you a sounding board,” he said. “It helps you benchmark ideas, share experiences and stay grounded in your profession.”

Organisations such as PARIMA, he believes, play an important role in building these connections by creating platforms for knowledge exchange and collaboration among risk professionals across the region.

The Value of Curiosity

For young risk professionals beginning their careers, Synthil believes curiosity and relationship-building are essential.

“You need to be proactive about building your network and understanding your industry,” he advised. “And it’s not just about connecting with senior leaders; it’s about building relationships based on trust and shared values.”

Looking Ahead

“Risk managers are becoming the people who connect the dots,” he said. “We help organisations navigate uncertainty, identify trends and prepare for what may come next.”

For someone who has already navigated multiple industries, continents and cultures, Synthil’s perspective reflects a career built on adaptability and continuous learning, qualities that define what it truly means to build a career far from home.
